Food can be assessed for taste, nutrition evidence, innovation or packaging. Establish the intended assessment to determine whether samples, evidence or design files are required.
Taste assessment concerns eating and drinking performance
Great Taste focuses on food and drink taste, awarding stars to individual products. Provide the flavour, preparation method and storage requirements so that the entry matches the sample actually supplied.
A range cannot be combined solely because it shares a brand. Check the official entry unit when flavour, formulation or preparation changes. Retail packaging helps identify a product but does not replace tasting.
Quality programmes use category-specific methods
Monde Selection’s evaluation information separates product categories and their sensory and other methods. Check labels, ingredients, use and the category’s supporting materials rather than copying another product type’s checklist.
Similar words such as taste and quality do not establish identical judging or results. Communications should use the actual title, level and product name granted, without extending them to all products or every quality attribute.
Innovation requires verifiable improvement
World Food Innovation Awards 2027 identifies product, innovation and business-initiative categories. Explain what changed, the problem addressed and evidence relevant to the category.
The 2027 entry section states that assessment uses submitted information and does not require product samples. Follow the current requirement rather than assuming that every food award needs samples. Products, ingredients, packaging and marketing initiatives should use their respective categories.
Packaging design is a different assessment object
Pentawards assesses packaging design. Food packaging can demonstrate structure, visuals, information and use, but a packaging distinction should not be described as a food-taste or formulation-quality award.
If one product enters taste and packaging programmes, maintain separate materials: one for eating and sample conditions, the other for design and application. Names, versions and images may be linked; result records remain separate.
Check exclusions before scheduling
Not every food is eligible for every tasting programme. Read the accepted scope for baby food, supplements, special-storage products and products requiring complex preparation. Similar category wording is not a substitute for an eligibility decision.
After selecting the direction, confirm launch window, entry unit, materials and samples. Where one organiser runs several food programmes, use the specific programme and edition. Do not combine overview dates with old detailed rules.
Use the food and drink directory. For samples or several flavours, see product assessment and sample coordination.

Preparation checklist
| Assessment | Preparation and limits |
|---|---|
| Taste and sensory | Follow sample rules; a tasting result is not medical-efficacy evidence |
| Nutrition evidence | Formulation, label and evidence sources; review is not batch testing |
| Innovation | Identifiable change and evidence, rather than promotional wording alone |
| Packaging design | Design images, object and completion; not recognition of formulation |
| Product quality | Check the actual parameters and method; do not describe all awards as certification |
A practical question
Does a free document review remove the need for evidence?
No. Programmes such as Nutrition Excellence expressly review supporting materials. No application charge and no samples do not mean no eligibility checks, no evidence or an automatic award.
Use the directory, or compare entry options. See Nutrition Excellence methods and scope.
