Define the product first, the intended assessment second, and eligibility and resources third. This produces a shortlist that can be compared and helps identify programmes that should not proceed.
Classify the actual product
The database maintains eight underlying sector categories: design and creative, food and drink, wine, spirits and beer, beauty and personal care, parenting, children and toys, technology and innovation, health, nutrition and sport, and fashion and lifestyle. They narrow the search; each programme’s eligibility must still be checked.
Products can retain several relevant tags. A connected children’s device relates to both a child-use setting and technology, but that does not make it eligible for every children’s or technology award. A classification is a search aid, not permission to enter.
Define the assessment object
Design assessment may concern form, function, interaction or communication work. Taste programmes assess the sensory performance of foods and drinks. Quality programmes use category-specific methods. Innovation programmes require an explanation of improvement in a product, technology or solution.
Red Dot Product Design assesses industrially manufactured products within its current launch window. Great Taste focuses on food and drink taste. Monde Selection organises evaluation by consumer-product category. The shared description “international award” does not make their objects interchangeable.
Put eligibility ahead of familiarity
Applicant, launch date, product completion, exhibitor status and exclusions determine whether an entry can be submitted. ToyAward 2027 requires the designated exhibitor status and excludes ideas and non-functional prototypes. A sector match does not satisfy those conditions.
Check rights and applicant identity as well. If a design agency submits for a company, confirm manufacturer, brand and team credits and authority, so that the entry and product records agree.
Create a shortlist with evidence
For each candidate programme, record the object, eligibility basis, edition, milestones, fee stages, materials and samples. Eligible and suitable candidates enter the preparation plan; uncertain conditions become confirmation tasks; hard exclusions prevent progression.
Compare the programme’s relationship to the product before time and cost. A packaging-design result should not become a taste claim, nor should recognition extend to an unentered range.
Search the directory by sector and assessment direction. A strategy review can examine a specific shortlist.

A practical question
Is “non-commercial award” a separate industry?
No. It describes a fee characteristic that can be combined with a sector filter. It does not imply government status and does not replace the actual fee and eligibility conditions.
Check the directory, or compare self-entry and support.
